From Campus to the Community: NYP’s Heartfelt Collaboration with
Serangoon Moral Family Service Centre (SMFSC)
In Nanyang Polytechnic, the value of ‘nurturing and caring’ runs through every endeavour. This value extends beyond academics, encompassing innovation, industry collaboration, and education. It manifests in a dedication to the holistic development of our learners and staff, a dedication that spills over the campus walls and into the heart of the community.
Nurturing hearts through intergenerational connection..
NYP's commitment to community impact is exemplified by initiatives like "Nostalgia Night: A Trip Back to the Past." In 2023, twenty-one (21) students from the Diploma of Social Work from the School of Health and Social Sciences, under the guidance of their lecturer, Ms. Siti Suliana, partnered with the Serangoon Moral Family Service Centre (SMFSC).
Their mission: to connect with senior residents of Lorong Lew Lian through shared memories and joyful experiences.
The students resourcefully organised a vibrant celebration of yesteryears. Senior residents relished captivating performances, playful games, and an ‘art jam’ that ignited their creativity. Lucky draws and delicious treats added to the festive atmosphere. Laughter and conversation filled the air, weaving a tapestry of intergenerational connection.
"Nostalgia Night" wasn't just about entertainment; it was about building bridges. For NYP's students, it was a stepping stone into the world of social work, offering invaluable insights into respect, community awareness, and social responsibility. These lessons are crucial for their journey into the real world, equipping them with the empathy and understanding needed to make a difference.
A touch of joy, a ripple of change...
The impact wasn't limited to NYP's students. SMFSC and the residents of Lorong Lew Lian also embraced the positive ripples of this initiative, as shared by Mr. Lee Zi Jian:
"It was heartening to witness how the students’ efforts had come to life. During Nostalgic Night, smiles from across all ages could be seen as both the young and old participated actively in the activities that were planned intricately by the students. Not only that, but there were plenty of interactions between the students and residents which highlighted the success of the event, given that ‘connection’ was one of the main goals of the event.
Post-event, the team at SMFSC has also been reaping the rewards of Nostalgic Night; relationships that were built then had grown beyond the event itself!"
This outreach initiative stands as a testament to the power of community engagement. It reminds us that bridging generations can foster laughter, understanding, and a sense of belonging. Through such initiatives, we weave a stronger social fabric, one thread of connection at a time.
